Kids: Healthy and Happy

by admin on March 4, 2009

I came across this cool contest over at Twitter Moms sponsored by Wellesse. For every blogger that enters this contest, they win a free bottle of Liquid Vitamin D!

Here’s the question:

What are your top five tips for making sure your kids are getting the important vitamins and minerals they need for strong bones?

With raising 3 boys under 4, I think I’ve started to get a pretty good grip on the things I need to do to insure that my boys form good habits where eating is concerned.

1. Everything in moderation. I NEVER pig out on junk in front of them. As parents, we have the most influence in front of our children and I don’t want my sons to think that mommy not being able to control herself around gummy bears is a habit that they should adopt. I am very conscious about what goes into my body, how much of it, and how often when around the boys.

2. Breast is best. I breastfed my oldest for 15 months and now I’m breastfeeding our twins. Does anything else in this world gaurantee a healthy start like breast milk? No.

3. Eat a Rainbow!  Each and every meal I make has a serving of fruit and vegetables, even breakfast. It’s extremely easy to add spinach to eggs, sweet potatoes or squash into waffles and pancakes, or bell peppers into hashbrowns.  Always set the goal for yourself that you get as many colors of both fruits and vegetables into your day as possible.

4. Shameless Sneaks For snacks, I am completely guilty of making “cupcakes” and other “desserts.” One of my favorite recipes is for apple cupcakes:
Core and halve an apple
Top with whipped cream cheese or peanut butter “frosting.”
Garnish with chopped dried fruit or nuts for “sprinkles.”

5. Sunshine Vitamin D is so vital to your system and what better way to get it than to give yourself a little sunshine? Not only does being outside give you the benefit of the sun’s rays, but it also gives you and your kids a chance to get some fresh air, play games that aren’t suitable for inside, and some bonding time!

Our kids also get a daily multivitamin, a probiotic, and Omega 3s but with economic times being like they are, it’s not always possible for every family to be able to get out and buy those extras.  By serving your children the rainbow and a variety of grains and meats, including yogurt of kefir into their diets, and making sure that an omega 3 rich fish is served once or twice a week, you can avoid having to spend the extra money on vitamins.

What do you do to make sure that your kids are getting everything their little bodies need?

These are some great ideas! I admit I was better at this when my son was younger, but I still try to make sure his diet is varied and healthy. And I always serve fruits or vegetables with meals. I recently started getting carbonated water to mix with fruit juices to drink instead of sugary sodas.

This one is my favorite…

I also love the toddler bedding, and it looks like the burp cloth would work great as well, even though my two have outgrown that stage.
